The Research Group Phycology (Ghent University, Belgium) has a vacancy for a 4-year position leading to a PhD. The project involves the identification and characterization of sex-specific proteins and genes in the brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus. The primary aim is to isolate lectins and glycoproteins known to mediate cell recognition between male and female gametes. The recognition process is viewed as crucial step in sexual reproduction, and evolution of the genes involved may ultimately provide useful insights in reproductive isolation and diversification. The project, funded by the Ghent University, runs in a collaboration with the Laboratory Biochemistry and Glycobiology (Prof. Els Van Damme). The successful candidate will join a team of academics and researchers working diversification of marine macroalgae (http://users.ugent.be/phycology/) as well as experts in carbohydrate-lectin interactions. Applications are invited from suitably qualified postgraduate candidates. Any previous experience in any of the following fields is considered a plus point: macroalgal culturing techniques; isolation and identification of proteins and peptides; bio-informatics. For more detailed information on the project, infrastructure and working environment contact: Olivier.declerck@ugent.be. Application deadline: 1 December 2008.

A postdoctoral and a PhD student positions are available immediately to investigate the role of the transcription/DNA repair factor TFIIH in the regulation of gene expression and genome maintenance. Mutations in three of the ten subunits of TFIIH results in genetic disorders xeroderma pigmentosum and trichothiodystrophy. Since several years, Jean Marc Egly's lab at U. Strasbourg, France has contributed to a better understanding of the regulation of protein coding gene transcription and nucleotide excision repair (NER) by dissecting the function of each of the ten subunits of TFIIH. In addition our work provide explanations for the clinical features of the XP/TTD/CS patients and those who have hormone deregulation problems. Specific studies include RT-PCR, ChIP, in vitro and in vivo transcription and DNA repair assays, establishment of stable cell lines, structure-function analyses. Experience in molecular techniques and protein purification is desirable. Fundings are provided by either the EU and the French national research agency. Post-doc and PhD positions at the Centre of Knowledge Based Nanomaterials and Technologies at Szczecin University of Technology, Poland are open. This work is part of the Marie-Curie Research and Training Network “CARBIO” – Multifunctional carbon nanotubes for biomedical applications.

The CARBIO partners apply a multidisciplinary approach in order to exploit the potential of multi-functional carbon nanotubes (CNT) for biomedical applications. CNT with tailored functionalities (different filling, heat sensitive caps) will be synthesized and modified to become compatible to biological systems. Their chemical and physical properties will be studied in order to find mechanisms, which can be applied for a biomedical purpose in appropriate medical devices. Studies of their interaction with biological environments (immune response, toxicity, interaction with the single cell) will provide the basis for applying the CNT for imaging (nanoparticles-based contrast agents), sensoring (nanoparticles-based diagnostics) and cancer treatment (hyperthermia, nanotechnology-based targeted drug delivery).

Studies on the exohedral functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) , e.g. by coating with lipids, chemical bonding with carboxyl groups, amides and antibodies. A first step will be to increase the water solubility of the CNT. Non-covalent functionalisation will be done via stacking/hydrophobic interactions. The formation of covalent linkage with the CNT will be performed via functional side groups attached to the tube wall produced during acid treatment of the tubes. Covalent functionalisation will be done with carboxylic groups and with biomolecules or with non-covalent attachment directly to the CNT (biopolymer wrapping, insertion and adsorption). Heat sensitive organic molecules will be attached to open CNT, thereby providing heat sensitive caps of the CNT. The applicant will also support reserch task 2 (see the project website) which involves the synthesis and metal flling of MWCNT.

The fellowships are well paid, including a basic living and a mobility allowance (with deductions by national laws) and travel and career exploratory allowances according to the Marie Curie rules. Each fellow will get an employment contract with one partner and will perform secondments at other partners. A generous career development package is included. CARBIO offers 12 three-years fellowships for Early-Stage Researchers (PhD positions) and 4 fellowships for Experienced Researchers (ER).

The applicants must meet the requirements of the Marie-Curie fellowships. E.g., the fellows must be nationals of a state other than the country where they will perform their studies and they may not have carried out their main activities in that country for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the start of the fellowship. Applicants should be EU citizens.

A 3-year Marie Curie PhD studentship for a non-French citizen is available at the Station Biologique de Roscoff (Britanny, France). Subject: Halogenation is an original and unexplored defence pathway in marine algae. This PhD proposal aims at investigating these specific processes in the new brown algal model Ectocarpus siliculosus, taking advantage of new genomic and genetic resources (a large-scale project to sequence the complete genome of Ectocarpus is underway and will be achieved in 2006 at Genoscope, France).

The project will involve the use of genomics, proteomics and metabolite profiling methodologies to characterise these specific metabolic pathways in Ectocarpus. It will also benefit of a genetic approach to identify and characterize mutants altered in halogenation processes and defence mechanisms. For more details on the project see:
