Post-doc in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology (3 years available) at Roscoff Biological Station (Brittany, France) in the field of structure of marine polysaccharides under the supervision of Dr. William Helbert. Context: The work program of the “Structure of Marine Polysaccharides” group concerns the study of anionic marine polysaccharides (carrageenan, ulvan,…). The group has acquired a strong expertise in the structural analysis of carrageenan using enzymes (i.e. carrageenases) combined to chromatography, NMR and mass spectrometry analyses. In addition, several original enzymes have been purified from bacteria or algae in our group and they have been characterised biochemically. Mission: The project aims at purifying and characterising new carrageenan modifying enzymes involved in the biosynthesis and biodegradation of the red algae cell wall. These enzymes represent a new class of enzymes which amino acid sequence as well as the corresponding gene will have to be elucidated. Overexpression of the protein in heterologous system will be then undertaken. This research will be achieved in the framework the European project PolyModE (FP7): Polysaccharides modifying enzymes. The aims of this project are to identify, analyse and use various polysaccharide modifying enzymes in order to be able to conceive and produce polysaccharides with determined physicochemical properties. Applicants: Biochemist having experience in protein purification and molecular biology is required.
Knowledge in polysaccharides biochemistry is appreciated. Contacts: William Helbert at helbert@sb-roscoff.fr. Tel: +33 (0)2 98 29 23 32. Application deadline: not known.
